What is Chocucos Tours?

Chocucos Tours is a local venture founded by friends and nature enthusiasts, specializing in nature photography, birdwatching, and sport fishing in the Caño Negro area. Despite being little explored even by locals, we aim to showcase the beauty of this region and its diverse wildlife to the global audience.

Mission

Our mission is to promote the Caño Negro region to both national and international tourists through a sustainable tourism approach, while also supporting the local economy.

Vision

To consolidate local entrepreneurship that promotes both national and international tourism, fostering growth for families in Caño Negro by showcasing this area of the country through sustainable expedition development.

What is its
origin story?

It originated as a response to the desire to introduce tourists to this hidden gem, showcasing its biodiversity within the context of ecological conservation. With a commitment to environmental and social responsibility, the project acts as a bridge between tourists and local guides. It stemmed from conversations among friends who share a deep appreciation for and experience with nature. Our aim was to promote local tourism and support the sustainable growth of the community.

Caño Negro

Caño Negro is a hub for tourism development, centered around the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is of a mixed nature, with some of its territory belonging to the state and another portion being privately owned.

Situated in the northern region of the country, near the Nicaraguan border, between the cantons of Guatuso and Los Chiles, it covers an area of 9,969 hectares. Its establishment aims to safeguard wetlands crucial for both land and aquatic wildlife, serving as a perpetual sanctuary for the region’s unique species.

Established as a RAMSAR Site on December 27, 1991, it is recognized globally for its importance in safeguarding valuable resources, making it one of the first two in Costa Rica. This protected area is now widely known among biologists worldwide and nature enthusiasts, as well as fishing enthusiasts, for its awe-inspiring biodiversity.
